  • Starting a luckless mage

NOTE: This guide contains a dice roll section for AP points. We would like to inform you that dice roll function is not used anymore in GMS and MapleSEA. Please avoid that section and everytime you level up, press 'a' and press auto-assign to auto-assign your points, then after you get your job advancement, press 'a' again and auto-assign your skills to the proper ones. You may continue that system or if you are looking to use a special point build eg. dexless assassin, then you may do so.

Roll the dice until you get at least 11 INT. More is better. You can settle for 10 if it takes too long, but that will cost you a bit of damage.

More STR at the beginning may ease your life on Maple Island, as you might be able to two hit kill snails. However you should never, EVER place AP into STR unless you have AP reset cards you wish to use later on, just to have an easier time in Maple Island. Only train on snails. The green ones. Do all the quests that don't require you beating on orange mushrooms nor on red snails. They're really not worth it.

As you level up, only, I repeat, only put points in INT, even when you get to level 1XX. Nothing else.

Once you get to level 7 with 55% experience, take the boat to Victoria.

    Becoming a luckless mage

Once you're at Lith Harbour, talk to Olaf. Tell him you want to become a mage. He'll give you a quest where you'll have to go talk to Grendel the Really Old. Take the quest, then go buy a ticket to Ellinia from the ticket place.

Once you at Ellinia, go up to the very top. Grendel is in the building in there. Talk to him, complete your quest. It'll give you 300 experience, which will level you up if you already have 55%. If not... you're more or less screwed. Once you level up, talk to him again and become a mage.

    Skills

Here's a table for skill points. Follow it closely to maximize damage. Now is not the time to fool around with skills yet. There are guides you must not follow, others you'll have to.

    - Put your first skill point into Energy Bolt.

    - As you get more points from leveling up, put 5 into MP Recovery to unlock MP Increase.

    - Max MP Increase as you go on.

    - When done with MP Increase, max MP Recovery.

    - When that's done, you're supposed to be at level 17 with one extra point. Put it in Magic Claw but don't use it yet as it drains MP too much.

    - Max Magic claw afterwards.

    - Boost Magic Guard, not Magic Armour, until level 30.

This is essentially a standard build for all mages.

    Equips

    Weapons:

Level 8 - Get your Wooden Wand. Keep it until level 40.

Level 40 - Buy a Yellow Umbrella if you didn't get a Maple Lama Staff from Horned Mushroom drops. Average (52magic) sells for 250 to 300k in the Free Market. This number can change.

Level 43 - Get a Maple Lama Staff if you're rich enough. They sell for 5-10 million in the Free Market. This number can change. The staff is better than the umbrella because it's compatible with Spell Booster, a 3rd job skill.

    Hats:

Level 10 - Get a white bandana, either from slime drops or from the shop at Lith Harbour.

Level 25 - Get a Starry Bandana from the shop at Kerning.

Some quests give hats too, you might want to check them out.

    Top:

Level 11 - Get one ofthe two level 11 shirts at Lith Harbour.

    Bottom:

Level 11 - Get the Grey Thick Sweat Pants at Lith Harbour. Skip if you want to save money.

Level 16 - Get the Ice Jeans at Lith Harbour if you want extra MP. Get the Sandblasted Jeans if you want HP.

Level 26 - Get the Camo Pants at the shop at Henesys.

    Shoes:

Level 11 - Get one of the Gomushins at Kerning.

Get the level 16-26 shoes at Henesys if desired.

Level 31 - Get a pair of Sneakers at Henesys.

    Gloves:

Level 10 - Get a pair of Work Gloves from JM from tha Streetz if you have 15 leathers.

    Cape:

Get a cape if desired. Look around for guides to quests for capes.

    Shield:

Get a Stolen Fence from the shop at Lith Harbour.

Get a Pan Lid if desired.

EDIT from Lkraie" "Weapon" If you have money or cash to splash: lvl 35 Maplestaff

    lvl 43 Maplelama staff, lvl64:Maple widam staff/wand,

DO NOT get umbrellas unless you really intend to use AP reset next time. Purple Umbrella requires 6 str, Green PaintBrush 5 str, and Black Umbrella requires 5 to all stats. Just hold out for the Maple Widam staff or the lvl 110 Wands (0 req)

    Training

I, unlike others, do not recommend training on stuff you can kill in 1 hit after level 25. Too easy, gets boring fast.

Level 1-7: Green snails and quests at Maple Island. Don't do the hard ones.

Level 8-17: Slimes (Slime tree dungeon near to Ellinia)

Level 18-21: Orange mushrooms (Next to Kerning) or Pigs (Pig Beach)

Level 20-25: Horned Mushrooms (Horned Mushroom tree dungeon), Stirges (Kerning Subway), Party Quest (Kerning)

Level 25+: Here's when it gets fun. You can still do the Party Quest until level 30, but as you level, it gives less experience, making you do more and wait more and so on. After level 25, you can train on pretty much anything that you can kill in 2-3 hits. Find a good map with plenty of monsters, try to wipe them all out, watch the experience roll in.

    A few recommendations

    - Don't go to the Pig Beach unless you packed yourself with HP Potions. The pigs there spawn very quickly and you may find yourself trapped.

    - Don't do the Party Quest until level 23, at least. Or you'll just waste your time and money.

That concludes my first guide ever, hope you enjoyed it! Please comment on it, or tell me if I'm missing anything.
